Altered States: The Collection in Context

Altered States: The Collection in Context an exhibition of artworks related to the mystical, the transcendent and the transformative.  The exhibition has been extended through February 20, 2010.

Among the many themes embedded in the di Rosa’s extensive collection, the notion of spirituality—or at least an altered state of consciousness—is discernable in the work of a number of artists.  The Bay Area has long been an accommodating home to people searching for different views of reality, and its artists have often made visible those alternative views. In addition to presenting artworks from the di Rosa collection, Altered States: The Collection in Context introduces works that address the metaphysical by other contemporary Bay Area artists.  Artists included in the exhibition are Lynne-Rachel Altman, Jim Campbell, Bruce Conner, Linda Connor, Lewis deSoto, Robilee Frederick, David Ireland, Keira Kotler, Thérèse Lahaie, Richard Misrach, Robert Moon, David Simpson, Travis Somerville, Elisabeth Sunday, Michele Théberge, and Darren Waterston.

I See Hawks in LA Concert with Susan James opening

Formed in 1999, I See Hawks in L.A. play high, lonesome country rock with three part harmonies, twang guitar with acoustic arrangements, with lyrics musing on mortality, the environment and the geography of pre-apocalyptic L.A., playing with an experimental spirit and incorporating wide ranging music styles including bluegrass, country psychedelia and steel driven honky tonk.

After a self imposed hiatus, Susan James is back! Susan's latest recordings will be released in 2010. Her wonderful friends in the band "I See Hawks in L.A." are backing her up for these recordings. How do you sum her up? Someone who loves a well-written song, as well as experimenting and pushing the boundaries.

"James' long blond hair and folk-based songs have caused her to be compared to Joni Mitchell. The inventiveness of her eight-song set, however, showed that James is perhaps most like Mitchell because she is like no one else." - Noel Davis, Los Angeles Times

Missy Raines and The New Hip

Seven-time International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) bass player of the year Missy Raines is a popular figure in the bluegrass community for her warmth and her passion for the music and its practitioners. She spent years as a valued member of the Claire Lynch Band and half of a remarkable duo with guitarist Jim Hurst. But for much of that time she was dreaming of something beyond that familiar terrain.

The New Hip's name is at once a subtle tribute to "Birth Of The Cool," the heraldic 1950 album by Miles Davis that Raines cherishes, as well as a wry joke about a life-changing surgery that has allowed Raines to play in her famously physical style without pain for the first time in decades. That liberation resembles the musical freedom enjoyed by this young and vibrant band. The New Hip lets Raines compose and exchange ideas with four players ranging in age from 17 to 27 who grew up enthralled by traditional American roots music and its modern offshoots, just like their boss.

The band consists of 26-year old dobro player Michael Witcher, brother of Gabe who plays fiddle in a similarly exploratory string band, Chris Thile's Punch Brothers. Mandolin and guitarist Ethan Ballinger, 22, is a son of Kris and Dale of the respected band the Cluster Pluckers, and he grew up surrounded by traditional music. The very young Dillon Hodges recently won the Winfield Flatpicking Championship at age 17. Drummer veterans, Doug Belote and Tommy Giampietro share duties on the percussion side.

Along with Lubbock bred childhood pals Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock has been active in their group work as The Flatlanders. Hancock's "If I Were a Bluebird" was made popular by Emmylou Harris. His songs have also been recorded by Willie Nelson and Jerry Jeff Walker, among many others. Music, Memories, and the Brain

We all know the feeling: a familiar song comes on the radio and suddenly vivid memories come flooding back - to a high-school dance or childhood friends - a mental movie begins playing in our mind. What is it about music that can trigger such powerful memories?

Dr. Petr Janata, Associate Professor of Psychology at UC Davis's Center for Mind and Brain, thinks he may now have the answer. By conducting a study of mapping the brain activity of a group of students while they listened to familiar music, Dr. Janata found that the region of the brain where memories of our past are supported also serves as a hub that links music, memories and emotion.
Join us for this intriguing look inside Dr. Janata's discovery, and learn how music can evoke powerful memories of a person or place in your mind's eye.
